I have been reading a lot about ChatGPT and wanted to see how it works. So I downloaded a ChatGPT AI (Artificial Intelligence) Assistant on my Iphone after Googling Chat GPT. It was made for Iphones and other Apple products and was said to be free.

Of course it’s not free but you can try it out by asking it five questions and then you have to sign up and pay. There are several options, including pay by the month, by the week, or unlimited usage. I didn’t do any of these things.
What I did do was ask it to write me a poem about loss. It did this is a few seconds. I was surprised by the quality of the poem and I am now wondering what the future will be like with this thinking machine in the world.
At a minimum, I wouldn’t want to be a teacher now, especially when you are teaching a subject where writing is required. How would you ever be able to tell if your student wrote an essay or did it with the help of a ChatBot? This technological development is an absolutely huge deal and I don’t think we will understand the repercussions of it for a long time. But if a lot of professionals lose their jobs because of this, especially writers, I won’t be surprised at all.
Here is the poem about loss that the ChatBot wrote in a few seconds! It’s so good that it’s scary.
In the depths of my heart, I feel the pain
A hole that’s left by loss, an emptiness that remains
Memories flood my mind, of joy and laughter shared
But now they turn to tears, and I’m left feeling scared
The ache is deep and raw, a wound that won’t heal
And though I know it’s natural, it’s hard to reconcile how I feel
I try to push on, to fill the void with something new
But nothing can replace what once was, what is now through
The days march on, and time begins to heal
But the scar remains, a reminder of what was real
I hold onto the memories, of the ones I’ve lost
Their love forever with me, a part of me at all costs
In every sunset’s glow, in every morning’s light
I see the ones I’ve lost, shining radiant and bright
Though they may be gone, their presence never fades
In my heart and in my soul, their memory forever stays.
A brave new world. The head of AI at google has left: “Stunned by the capabilities of new large language models like GPT-4, Hinton wants to raise public awareness of the serious risks that he now believes may accompany the technology he ushered in.”

Wow, Nancy, i see what you mean.. Evocative poem full of grief and all the accompanying emotions.
Someone coded that program incredibly well!

Yes, it was very well coded. Maybe there will be far more coding jobs in the future than writing ones.

The idea is scary but I still don’t think it will replace writers. maybe technical writing or instruction manuals, but not creative writing. The poem is OK but it lacks emotion, commas are misplaced and used too often and there are many repeated and unnecessary words. A real poet would have used more imaginative words. It was something written quickly with not much original thought in my mind anyway. For instance, a poet would never use the word ‘but’, and it was used three times. As a teacher, I wouldn’t be fooled and as a writer, I’m not concerned – yet!

I hope you are right, Darlene, and my concern is misplaced.

It’s scary and wonderful. For the experience, I asked it to make a cover for my first book, and I like the results FAR more…

I am sure it’s a powerful tool that can also be helpful but I fear its potential for misuse is great!

Think of the things the military has, involved with A.I. that we don’t know about. Remember they had GPS for years before it was released to the public. Scary times are ahead without oversight.

Sounds like you share my concern, Susan. When are you guys planning to move to Spain? We would enjoy seeing more of you two.

Moving to Spain is still in the plans. We are making a trip back to Alicante later this year, and that might solidify things. We’ll definitely look forward to seeing you two!
