My Heavy Heart

I am retired and no longer have to work

So why am I so sad?

I am in good health as is my husband

So why am I so sad?

We have enough money to not worry about the future

So why am I so sad?

Is the pandemic taking the joy out of living?

There are more than 300 million cases now. More than 830,000 people have died from Covid in the US, 620,000 in Brazil, nearly half a million in India.

Maybe all this death and disease is a symptom of a world out of balance, where exploitation of nature has come back to harm us.

Unless we start making better choices, I will continue to fear for our future.

We seem to be experiencing environmental catastrophes weekly: Floods, fires, hurricanes…

Things do seem grim. Hope is hard to hold onto.

And yet, can’t we still find joy in the smallest of things?

A sunny day

Birds in song

A delicious meal

A friend’s smile

A good night’s sleep

A good book

This will have to be enough for now.

This will have to be enough til we can all learn to ferociously protect our mother earth and treat her with the respect she deserves.

Until then, I will be sad for me, for humankind and especially sad for our planet.

  1. I think everyone on the planet can relate to these feelings right now. It does seem like we can’t seem to get the upper hand on this pandemic, on top of impending climate doom and so many other big worries. All we can do is focus on what we’re grateful for and the little things that bring joy, as you are doing. And we have to hang on to our hope. I really feel 2022 will be a much better year!

  2. I think Covid has affected us all more than we realise. I used to think I was a very well adjusted person, able to cope with whatever life threw at me but now I find that I’m not and am frequently at a loss to deal with ordinary, everyday things, plus I’d love for someone to tell me just to sit down and have a good cry! Now, i ask you? Is that normal? Not for me, it isn’t.

    1. Yes, Mari, I feel like a different person now too. I feel like someone who has trouble staying positive. Before Covid, that wasn’t the case. This pandemic is taking a big psychological toll on millions of people. Also, give yourself permission to have a good cry. You will feel better afterwards!

  3. I’m sad too. I’m waiting for someone to say, “That’s it… We’re done with the 😷 and the pandemic. All good from here on!” But instead it’s somber warnings that this IS the new normal. So so sad.
