I recently discovered a great way to explore the world without leaving your house. It’s a company called Heygo. https://www.heygo.com/. You can travel to many far-flung places and it doesn’t cost anything. The web site includes a calendar with all upcoming tours on it. So you peruse that and sign up for whatever live-stream tour strikes you fancy and is happening while you are awake. After you have signed up, you get a handy email reminder an hour before the tour is to begin. This email includes a link to join the tour at the appropriate time. Once you join the tour, you see and hear your tour guide and also see the first names of the other people who have signed up for the tour.
Once the tour begins, it’s almost like being there because the guide walks around with a camera on his tablet and he or she talks about what you and the other people participating are seeing. So far, I have explored the old part of Prague with a Czech woman tour guide a few days ago and then last night I went on a tour of Las Ramblas with a Spanish man serving as a tour guide. These were both places I had been before but I saw and learned new things on both tours because I was with a guide this time! For example, I had walked Las Ramblas with my family a few years ago but this time I learned there was a pretty mosaic and a plaza by this famous walkway with a pretty fountain. I had not known about these sights before. The guide, who was named Pepus, also pointed out various buildings facing Las Ramblas I had not noticed on my previous trip walking down this path.
Heygo allows you to take “postcards” (photos) of what you are seeing and you can save them to your computer to review later or share with others. I took two dozen photos of the sights I saw on Las Ramblas.
If you want to pay some money to thank the tour guide, you can leave him or her a tip. The suggested donation is 5 or 10 euros. You aren’t required to pay, however. But if you do, the tour guide and other participants in the tour receive a notification on the right hand side of the screen that you left a tip. You can easily give a tip with a credit card or Paypal. To do that, there is a box you can click on the left hand side of the screen that says, leave a tip. So they make this whole process very easy for you.
You can also write out your questions during the tour and the guide or another participant will answer the questions. For example, I asked how to access my postcards after the tour was over and two participants explained to me how to do that on the group chat. Overall, I would say this is a great new tour company and I hope they are very successful.
So without further ado, here are some of my postcards of the Las Ramblas tour in Barcelona.
As you can see from these photos, I got to see a lot of sights on my computer from the comfort of my home. Isn’t that great? This is a safe, free, and easy way to see the world during a pandemic! There are tours every day from a variety of locations around the world, including in Asia, Europe, Africa, South America and North America. There are even tours to locations I have never heard of in the world. So check it out! You will be glad you did. https://www.heygo.com/.
